Citius, Altius, Fortius

the slogan of the international Olympic movement is Faster, Higher, Stronger - and every four years people come together to celebrate that slogan.

this time it's something special. Athens was the birthplace of the ancient Olympics, but the beijing Olympics marks the birth of something else, the final declaration of the arrival of China onto the world stage.

and the opening ceremony was simply staggering in its imagination and scope and the execution of such preciseness. from visual depictions of paper paintings and Admiral Cheng Ho, to the down-to-earth yet philosophically astute idea of athletes "leaving their footprints" - the Chinese left very little unplanned.

every formation was perfect, every wushu artist in place, every pretty girl in white boots with a bottle of water to get them through the hot night - nothing was left to chance.

and when the flame ignited, it really ignited. it didn't splutter to life, it roared into the night sky. China has never before felt so proud of itself!

(i must say i still prefer Antonio Rebollo's flaming arrow into the Barcelona cauldron in 1992)

Phelps, Liu Xiang, Federer, Bolt, Kluft, Sotherton, Messi, Pendleton, Hackett, Yao Ming - the stage is theirs now!
